CMDI Technology Policy Principles

Revised May 2025

Introduction

As a leader in media, communication, and information education and scholarly and creative work, the College of Communication, Media, Design, and Information (CMDI) is dedicated to fostering a secure, innovative, and inclusive technological environment for all community members.

We prioritize collaboration and the seamless integration of technology services while embracing sustainability and digital responsibility in all our practices. Our principles guide us in providing consistent support, ensuring accessibility, and maintaining stringent security and privacy standards.

By aligning with the CU System and Â鶹ԭ´´'s policies, we empower our community to make value-driven technology choices, supporting the diverse needs across disciplines.

Together, we are building a future where technology, education, and creativity merge, driving our mission forward.

Preamble

These principles are a foundation for establishing an effective, secure, efficient, and well-managed technology environment within CMDI. They foster a culture of responsibility and innovation while safeguarding critical resources and information. Thus, they support the college's mission for Students, Faculty, and Staff.

Principles for Technology Service Policy and PracticeÌý

Accessibility and Inclusivity:ÌýEnsure all technology services and resources are accessible to a diverse community of students, Faculty, and staff. Prioritize inclusive design where appropriate, make digital content and tools available to everyone, and actively promote a culture of inclusive technology within the college.

Collaboration and Integration:ÌýFoster collaboration and ensure seamless integration of technology services throughout the college. Engage in departmental technology management and collaborate with Faculty or their representatives to comprehend and address their technological needs. Aim for interoperability among systems to improve efficiency and communication while actively pursuing opportunities for interdisciplinary technological partnerships when suitable.

Innovation and Adaptability: Create a culture that promotes innovation and embraces new technologies. Assist students, Faculty, and staff in discovering fresh tools and methods while ensuring our technology infrastructure remains flexible and scalable for future developments.

Security and Privacy:ÌýImplement robust cybersecurity measures to safeguard sensitive data networks and personal information. Maintain strict privacy standards and comply with relevant regulations. Educate all stakeholders on responsible data handling and network practices to maintain the trust and privacy of our college community.

Support and Service: Deliver consistent and timely support to students, Faculty, and staff. Emphasize technological assistance in learning, creative spaces, and scholarly endeavors. Treat everyone with fairness, empathy, and respect, approaching interactions with each other from a place of grace.

Sustainability and Responsibility: Make sustainability a fundamental principle in technology service delivery. Aim for eco-friendly practices in technology procurement, disposal, and energy use. Encourage digital responsibility, including the ethical use of technology and responsible data management among all college community members.

Values and Specificity: Acknowledge that our values are integrated into our technology choices and empower CMDI community members to make value-driven decisions regarding their technologies. Offer options that enable students, Faculty, and staff to avoid unnecessary data collection or vendor lock-in, lower costs, and explore suitable alternatives to dominant platforms in support of the specific needs of each discipline across programs in the college.

Revision Procedure and Protocol

The CMDI Director of Technology Experience and the Dean's Technology Advisory Committee (DTAC) will review these global principles and policies as needed every two years, receiving final approval from the CMDI Dean.

The CMDI Technology Team will review individual variances in policy and present them for DTAC review. The CMDI Director of Technology Experience, in consultation with the CMDI Dean, will ultimately approve them.

Reserved Privilege

The CMDI Technology Team reserves the right to deny support for technology outside the CU System, University, or CMDI procedure and protocol until the above revision process has been reviewed and approved.

Consideration of Capacity

The Technology Team will do its best to support Students, Faculty, and Staff with the technology used in pedagogy and scholarly and creative work within the CMDI Technology Team's capacity, as defined by accompanying Service Level Agreements (SLA).
