Laser Safety Training

Individuals are not permitted to work with lasers until they have completed the appropriate training. This includes both general laser safety training and lab-specific instruction.

  • Laser Awareness Training is required for individuals working with Class 3R or lower lasers. This training is available online through BioRAFT.
  • General Laser Safety Training is required for individuals working directly with Class 3B or Class 4 lasers or laser systems. This training may be completed either online or in person. In-person sessions are conducted by the Laser Safety Officer (LSO). For scheduling and additional information, please refer to the EH&S website.
  • Lab-Specific Laser Training is conducted in person by the Principal Investigator (PI) or Laser Safety Liaison (LSL). This training must cover the safe operation of specific laser systems, including associated equipment and established Laser Safety Procedures for each system in the lab. Training should also address any embedded laser systems, with an emphasis on the highest laser classification present. The LSO is available to support the development of lab-specific training materials.

All laser users working with Class 3B and 4 lasers, including PIs, are required to refresh their knowledge of laser safety every three years (from initial training). Laser users can fulfill this requirement by completing the respective online Laser Safety Training courses. Refresher Laser Specific Training is also required for all users working with new lasers. This training should include the basic operation of the laser, its associated systems and a focus on the established Laser Safety Procedures of the new laser.
